About me

My name is Eli, and I'm an absolute nerd.

I like to write, read, and write some more. I like to challenge myself by writing about topics I lack expertise. The best writing comes from people who have no idea what they are doing.

The explorative approach means that I like research. After three years of writing about everything from cryptocurrency to bbq brisket, I think I've done a lot.

How do you continue to grow your professional skills?

I have a collection of blogs on Feedly, read books on Kindle, and listen to books on Audible. When I'm not writing something, I'm reading something.

Here are some books I just finished:

  • The Way of Kings - Brandon Sanderson
  • Atlas Shrugged - Ayn Rand
  • What Your ADHD Child Wishes You Knew - Dr. Sharon Saline
  • The Poetic Edda - Jackson Crawford
  • Tribe of Mentors - Tim Ferris

I like to explore many different ideas counter to my own. I also build my skills by reading books like Ogilvy on Advertising, Scientific Advertising, and Seven Figure Copy. The more ideas you absorb (and consider), the better your writing can be.

Have you always been independent? What has your career trajectory been?

Like most people, I was fine with the whole 9-5 shtick until a few years ago. Then, I had an awakening that told me I hate the way most businesses run themselves.

So, I pulled a "Bender" from Futurama and started my own thing (minus the Blackjack and Hookers).

My parents were disabled, and I worked at various jobs where I struggled a bit. I worked at radio stations, fast food restaurants, hose production plants, insurance companies, and retail stores.

A call center broke me, as it does with so many freelancers.

That was three years ago, and despite some growing pains (some of which are still growing), I'm doing good. I love to work alongside people (as opposed to under them) and empower others in my position.
