How to Get Started with a Copywriting Contract Today

What is a basic contract for a freelance writer?

A freelance writing contract is a document that outlines the terms and conditions of the business relationships between a copywriter and their clients. It specifies the scope of work, payment structure, and other details to ensure both parties understand their obligations and rights.

Typically, it includes the services offered by the freelance writer, such as content types, the length of the project, expected turnaround time, payment terms, duties of both parties in case of dispute or breach of contract, confidentiality clauses, and copyright ownership information.

Additionally, it may include an exhibit specifying the exact deliverables required by the client. A copywriter contract template serves as a reliable starting point in creating a comprehensive agreement that ensures that all relevant provisions are covered.

Do I even need a copywriting contract?

The use of a freelance copywriting contract is highly recommended for any copywriter who wants to protect themselves and the work they produce.

A copywriting agreement values your time and effort.

A copywriting contract is an important, legally binding document that serves to protect both the copywriter and the client. Not only does it ensure that both parties are aware of their respective roles, duties, and responsibilities in a working relationship, but it also ensures that all terms set forth by each party are met and honored.

Your copywriting contract defines the project's scope.

A copywriting contract is essential in setting out the scope of a project and preventing scope creep. It defines what the freelance copywriter will be responsible for, how long they have to complete it, when the payment must be made, and any other details that both parties need to agree to in order to ensure a successful working relationship. Many copywriters discover their need for a contract a little too late when there is already a disagreement about one of their projects.

Clarify intellectual property rights in the contract.

A freelance writing contract should clarify the intellectual property rights associated with the work. The contract should specify who will own the copyright for the work produced, including any content created by the copywriter. Additionally, it should clarify if and how the client can use or modify the work produced by the copywriter.

What is unique about copywriting contracts?

Copywriting contracts provide legal protection for both the copywriter and the client, ensuring that each party is aware of their respective roles, duties, and responsibilities in the working relationship. They also help to define the scope of a project, preventing scope creep.

Additionally, copywriting contracts clarify intellectual property rights associated with the work. This means that both parties are clear as to who owns the copyright for the work produced and if and how the client can use or modify it. By providing legal protection for copywriting services, copywriting contracts can ensure that these services are properly recognized and compensated accordingly.

Copywriting can be a challenging job to define in a single document. Even though the work is usually done at a fixed price, there may be multiple steps and extra work can be added easily. A copywriter may write multiple pieces of content or sales copy for a single client. A contract between the copywriter and the client that covers all the services might be really difficult to predict.

We've thought about this for you. Here are a few unique things you should include in your next copywriting agreement:

  • Most jobs have room for edits and feedback. As a copywriter, you know the edits are coming. However, you should have a limit to the number of rounds of editing and a limit on the time between submission and requests for edits.
  • Copywriter portfolios are super important. So your contract should include a section that allows you to use your work in your portfolio.
  • Copywriting jobs can be notorious for scope creep, so your contract should contain a provision for how work outside the original requirements will be managed.
  • Strangely, many clients seem to receive their copy and then forget the copywriter exists and needs to be paid. Your contract should state that the rights to the content do not pass to the client until the final invoice has been paid.

There may be more sections you should include as a copywriter, but these are some areas unique to most copywriting jobs.

How do I create a copywriting contract?

Creating a copywriting contract is essential for protecting the rights of both the copywriter and the client. In order to create a sound and legally binding copywriting contract, it's important to consider certain elements, such as what services are offered, payment terms, intellectual property rights, and other relevant legal documents.

For best practice, draw up an agreement that covers all the details of the services provided by you, the copywriter, including any changes or revisions requested by the client and any other related information. The contract should also stipulate payment terms as well as outlining how intellectual property rights are handled – who owns which part of the content produced by the writer? It's also important to ensure that both parties agree on how disputed issues will be solved before signing a copywriting contract. Once completed, both parties should sign the document in order for it to become legally binding.

What are the benefits of using a copywriter contract template?

Using a copywriting contract template can be incredibly beneficial for both the copywriter and the client. Contract templates provide both parties with a clear understanding of their respective roles, duties, and responsibilities in the working relationship. They also serve to clearly define the scope of a project, preventing scope creep.

What should I include in a copywriting contract?

When it comes to copywriting contracts, there are certain elements that should be included in order to ensure the rights of both the copywriter and client are protected. These include specifying what services are offered, detailing payment terms, outlining how intellectual property is handled, and stating how disputes will be solved. A well-crafted contract can help manage expectations, create a clear understanding of roles between parties and protect all involved from any unwanted surprises or issues down the road. With our pre-approved template at your disposal, you'll have everything you need for an effective and legally binding copywriting agreement ready to go in no time!

What should I offer as a copywriter?

Copywriting services could include:

  • Advertising, marketing and sales letter writing

  • Advertising web page content, such as a sales page

Of course, anything written by a business could be written better by a professional. So, keep your ideas flowing and reach out to a target company to see if they will pay you for your service.

What is a basic contract for a freelance writer?

Freelancer Writing Contracts are documents which outline the work you can provide to the customers, along with the compensation you are expected to receive for this work from the client. Contracts also contain other information, including whether to own or sell the rights to the work for your portfolios.

Do copywriters make good money?

It's possible that a copywriter can make six figures a year; some copy editors make seven figures a year. Many copywriters make great money from it. And yeah, making money in the copy industry is definitely possible. Content writers, close colleagues of copywriters, can also make great incomes through writing.
